SAR Genealogical Research Library Receives Its 2000th Visitor!

On March 27, 2012, the SAR Genealogical Research Library received its 2000th visitor. Darin Bussabarger of Corydon, IN was the important visitor. It was Mr. Bussabarger's first visit to the library and he joined the Friends of the Library program that day. Congratulations to the library on reaching another milestone!

NSSAR Gives Thanks

November 15, 2011, was a day for the NSSAR to give thanks for the support given by the local community. The NSSAR hosted its 1st Annual Appreciation Luncheon in honor of its many volunteers and community supporters. As a non-profit organization, the SAR relies heavily on its volunteers to help fill in the gaps that come with having a small national staff. Without this help, the vital mission goals of education, history and patriotism would suffer greatly.

On Saturday, August 6, 2011, the SAR Genealogical Research library hosted its highest-attended genealogy workshop of its summer series. Jane-Rives Williams discussed in depth Kentucky’s unique tax lists, land warrants, and deeds and how one can better make use of them in genealogical research on Kentucky ancestors.

On July 9, 2011, the SAR Genealogical Research Library hosted the second workshop in its summer genealogy series. Covey’s presentation was titled “Soldier’s Stories: Early War Pension Records.” It focused on the vast and often underused genealogical information that can be found in pension files of soldiers that served from 1775-1902. Researching genealogy for over 25 years, Covey is very involved in the local genealogy community.

On June 4, 2011 The SAR Genealogical Research Library opened its doors for the first time on a Saturday to the public. The Library launched its summer schedule by presenting a Genealogy 101 Workshop. This free workshop was given by Michael Wells, NSSAR Library Committee Chairman, of the Alabama Society. The one-hour program covered such topics as vital records, church records, and online resources for tracing your family tree. Many workshop attendees were first time visitors to the library and stayed after the workshop to perform their own independent research.

NSSAR Revolutionary War Newspapers Now on Exhibit at Louisville Free Public Library

Three of the SAR’s colonial newspapers as well a piece of colonial currency can now be viewed by the public at the Louisville Free Public Library’s (LFPL) main branch at 301 York St., Louisville, KY. They are part of an exhibit titled Benjamin Franklin: In Search of a Better World on display from June 1-August 15, 2011. The exhibit features a six-panel display of Franklin’s life and accomplishments that is sponsored by the American Library Association and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Kentucky Council on Archives Holds Semi-Annual Conference at SAR Genealogical Research Library

On May 20, 2011 the SAR Genealogical Research Library was buzzing with archivists. The Kentucky Council on Archives (KCA) held its semi-annual meeting in the library, where archivists, librarians, and record managers from across the state came together to discuss issues that affect Kentucky’s archivists. KCA is a state-wide organization that supports all types of archives and serves as a platform for archives professionals to share ideas. Around 50 people attended, making it one of the most successful in recent memory.

The Cultural Consortium Holds Monthly Meeting at the SAR Genealogical Research Library

On February 17, 2011, representatives of the top cultural institutions from across the region held their monthly meeting at the SAR Genealogical Research Library in Louisville, KY. The Cultural Consortium is a group of organizations whose goal is to support one another in the production and implementation of programming geared toward local area school groups. Members of the consortium meet to discuss collaboration opportunities, best-practice procedures and other issues that face cultural institutions in the region.

Cornerstones of Freedom & Sons of Liberty-1775, by James Muir Now on Exhibit at the SAR Genealogical Research Library & NSSAR Headquarters.

James Muir, an SAR member, is a renowned bronze sculptor of allegorical art from Sedona, AZ. His work is featured in universities and cultural institutions across the country, including West Point Military Academy and the Thomas Jefferson Library.
